He also records the stories of the other men in his regiment. Most of the narrative at this point consists of Octavian’s musings in his journal-about his past and his future hopes, about his philosophical studies, about the details of his daily life. When Dunmore and his soldiers are stuck on their ships, the story comes to a screeching halt. However, interesting ideas and a fresh perspective don’t necessary make for a good story, and on audiobooks in particular, a compelling story is key for me. The fact that the Rebels are fighting for freedom, while enslaving so many, is a tragic irony of American history that Anderson looks at square in the face. It was jarring to hear those I’ve always thought of as “Patriots” or “Americans” being referred to as “Rebels,” although that’s obviously what they were from the British perspective. And I love the idea of looking at the American Revolution from a new angle. I think I’ve gotten used to it after listening to the first book. The old-fashioned language wasn’t really a barrier for my understanding. The story itself is much more straightforward than in the previous volume, and there are some amusing moments in the first chapter. Anderson's two Octavian Nothing books, gets off to a strong start.

Let’s start with something I loved about this book: the atmosphere. These few days have passed and I am still reeling, but I need to write this review before the story is no longer fresh in my mind. When I finished this book, I knew I would need a few days to process what I had read. You don’t know if the experience was bad and you hated it or if it was just so unexpected and strange that you can’t process it. Then, the ride stops and you sit there, hair tangled in your face, heart pounding, and wondering what the hell just happened. Then, you get to the last part of the ride and suddenly you’re jerked through two loops, a corkscrew, and 300ft drop that makes you almost fly out of your seat. In the middle of the ride, there’s a little drop and you’re surprised but keep enjoying the experience. You’re enjoying it and you feel comfortable and confident in what is going to happen next. To be more specific, it was a ride that starts out nice and easy. Were these deaths just bad luck or is there something more nefarious at work? Letters and diaries navigate contentions between theory and writerly authority as Byatt harmonises seductive secrets and descriptive imagery to launch a counter-attack against prescriptive critical reading. 3 Her novel attempts to deliver this message by pitting documents and secrets against representative literary theorists. 2 Byatt believes there are diverse reasons to keep the past ‘alive’, one of which is ‘the aesthetic need to write coloured and metaphorical language, to keep past literatures alive and singing, connecting the pleasure of writing to the pleasure of reading’.
